Sue (clark) needs to confirm any support by 31st of March. Please read to see hat you could do.

Kendal & Sedbergh Friends invite Quakers to join them in travelling from Swarthmore Hall in the Lake District to London this summer. People will travel by bike, bus, train, and even by motorised wheelchair, visiting meeting houses along the way, sharing stories of those affected by cuts to the welfare state. This ride for the common good will run from Saturday 21 July to 4th August, and anyone may join for all or part of the journey.

The group follow in the footsteps of Margaret Fell who, in 1660, delivered a message to the King requesting that he end the persecution of Quakers. Now that things have moved on, today’s Quakers will draw attention to often unseen people who are pushed into poverty by government cuts.

The ride organisers are looking for different and exciting ways of sharing the message that we can afford to care. Perhaps you could help - this could be through collecting stories, organising public meetings with politicians, churches or community groups along the way.

On reaching London they will deliver their declaration of support for the welfare state to the current government.

Why are they doing this?
The area meeting has a shared concern around welfare. Last year they organised a 50-mile walking and cycling pilgrimage for the welfare state, which you can read more about here: www.quaker.org.uk/our-work/our-stories/welfare-for-all

Meeting for Sufferings discussed their initiative, and minuted:
MfS/17/12/08 For The Common Good We receive minute 17.09.07 of Kendal & Sedbergh AM held on 17 September 2017 regarding the group ‘For the Common Good’ and Chris Bullard, from that area meeting, has told us more about the plans for the Ride of Witness 4 Equality and the Common Good in the summer of 2018, which will be passing through twelve Area Meetings. We hope that Friends will support this initiative where they are able.

How can you get involved?
You are being emailed because you are part of one of the meetings which the route passes by. They will be travelling around 30 miles a day. You can see details of the full route here: www.kendal-and-sedbergh-quakers.org.uk/page23.html If you would like to get involved either with the full ride, part of the ride when it is near you, or be involved in hosting the group in your meeting or organising an event to draw attention to welfare issues in your community as they pass through then they would love to hear from you.

Even if you think you could help the group organise their logistics in your area by recommending accommodation or information about active groups in the area then they would love to hear from you. So, if you want to get involved, or send through messages of support then contact the group on Quakers4thecommonGood@gmail.com.

They are asking MHs on their route to help them by providing lunches or overnight accommodation. The group will be in our area on 23\24th July (when they plan to lunch at Bentham and overnight at Settle) and 24\25 July when they hope to lunch at Skipton and overnight in Keighley. They then cycle to Bradford and onwards. Please could you let me know if you are able to provide overnight accommodation on Tuesday 24th July for anyone from this group as soon as possible as I need to confirm this to the organiser by 31 st March.
